Dual Planar Magnetic IEM
Campfire introduces the new Additive Acoustic Optical Inclusion (AAOI) housing, enhancing both performance and style. This innovative shell features built-in acoustic-shaping geometries, refining and enhancing the output of Astrolith’s dual planar magnetic drivers. Carefully engineered chambers create precisely controlled acoustic volumes, ensuring the desired sonic performance of the Astrolith.
In terms of style, the Astrolith’s shell is uniquely captivating. The transparent exterior reveals optically inclusive internal chambers, creating a gem-like effect. This design allows for changing perspectives and internal visibility from various angles, appearing sleek and black from a distance but revealing light and structure up close.
The Astrolith is topped with a high-grade, mirror-finish stainless steel lid featuring a sleek new ‘terraced’ design. This component is crafted from a full CNC billet process and polished by hand.
The body of the Astrolith is made from a clear polymer coated with biocompatible clear lacquer, with internal surfaces dyed black to create a unique semi-transparent appearance. This monolithic block design integrates highly engineered acoustic control volumes.
All high-grade stainless steel components, including the faceplate, MMCX ring, and nozzles, are produced through a full CNC billet process and polished to a high sheen by hand. The Astrolith’s unique shell design is both functionally superior and visually stunning.
Drivers
The latest creation from Campfire Audio’s acoustics team, the Astrolith, represents the pinnacle of in-ear monitors (IEMs) utilizing cutting-edge planar magnetic technology. Building on Campfire’s legacy of planar earphones, the Astrolith features two new drivers enhanced by our PPR and AAOI tuning elements. This fusion of planar magnetic driver advantages with decades of acoustic engineering expertise ushers in a new era for planar magnetic IEMs.
The Astrolith combines a 14.2mm planar magnetic main driver, covering sub-bass to mid frequencies, with a 6mm planar high-frequency tweeter. This crossoverless design delivers a full-range, dual-planar experience, showcasing the unmatched speed, accuracy, impact, and resolution unique to planar magnetic drivers. This configuration ensures intricate resolution, texture, and impact across the spectrum, along with exceptional high-frequency extension.
Campfire Audio’s Astrolith offers a truly unique and innovative experience in the high-end personal HiFi world. With advanced engineering, a meticulously tuned sound signature, and carefully selected drivers, the Astrolith forges its own path, redefining the possibilities for a new frontier in IEM technology.
Technicalities
Despite their large size, planar drivers can move incredibly fast. This speed enables them to produce clean, accurate detail and exceptional resolution, presenting your tracks with life-like realism. Every layer and element of your music is displayed on a vast auditory canvas, bringing each nuance to life.
Measurable metrics
The Astrolith is technically the best IEM Campfire Audio ever made, demonstrating superior performance in measurable electro-acoustic parameters.
Impulse response
The driver’s rapid and accurate movement is reflected in its outstanding impulse response—the ability to quickly respond to a signal and stop resulting movement. This allows the driver to move from one note to the next without overlap or ‘smearing.’ A comparison of the impulse response between the Astrolith’s 14.2mm planar driver and one of our most advanced dynamic drivers shows this clearly. Highlighted in blue, the Astrolith’s rapid impulse response demonstrates its lightning-fast signal production and the diaphragm’s ability to come to a quick stop.
Even diaphragm movement
The planar driver’s serpentine voice coil is evenly distributed across the entire diaphragm, ensuring uniform driver movement without warping or bending. This design contributes to the driver’s incredible accuracy and rapid impulse response, making each note tight and defined while avoiding the smearing seen in other large, dynamic drivers. This advanced design ensures that the electrical signal delivered to the planar driver’s diaphragm is converted in the most accurate way possible, producing a true-to-life reproduction of the music.
Wavefront
Another unique facet of planar performance is the propagation of a flat wavefront, in contrast to the conical wavefront created by standard cone speakers. The shape of a wavefront affects its acoustic interaction with the ear canal, influencing reflections and altering our perception of sound. The unique wavefront of planar drivers contributes to the special timbre and character of Campfire’s planar IEMs.
Low THD
Another advantage of planar technology is the incredibly low total harmonic distortion (THD) ratio. Campfire’s custom drivers already feature very low distortion levels, and our new planar drivers reduce this number by nearly half. Combined with the speed, precision, and even movement of the planar driver, this ultra-low THD ratio enhances the crisp, clean, and accurate sonic reproduction of the planar driver.
Advanced Campfire Audio acoustic engineering
The goal of Campfire Audio is to produce the world’s best-sounding HiFi in-ear monitors that stand out from  competitors, both in appearance and sound, while offering the industry’s finest customer service and lifetime warranty repair. With the Astrolith, they developed several unique acoustic technologies specifically for these miniature planar magnetic drivers.
Designing the 6mm planar magnetic tweeter presented a significant challenge for our engineering team. Despite its impressive output and raw signal quality, refining the 6mm planar driver to meet the specifications required entirely new acoustic components. Over eight months, they developed a new acoustic geometry specifically for high-frequency refinement and reproduction. This led to the creation of the Particle Phase Resonator (PPR), which phases and frequency-corrects all elements of the 6mm tweeter’s output. Without the PPR, the use of the 6mm driver would not have been possible.
Similarly, the sub-low-low-mid-low 14.2mm driver underwent extensive front and back-end acoustic load engineering to shape and refine the final output.
Combining all of Campfire Audio’s advanced acoustic engineering culminates in the Astrolith—a true purist HiFi dual planar magnetic IEM with an advanced acoustic crossoverless design. This advanced technology and engineering deliver an unparalleled IEM experience. The highlights of the Astrolith stem from the inherent qualities of planar magnetic design, enhanced by the meticulous technology and tuning from Campfire’s acoustic engineers. This results in ultimate speed and accuracy without harshness, cupping, or fatigue, delivering exceptional imaging, separation, decay, detail, and accuracy. The Astrolith excels in dynamic range, from subtle 5 Hz subsonic lows to ultra-high-frequency reproduction.
For the ultimate experience, Campfire Audio recommend using the Astrolith in full balanced mode, as the purist dual planar magnetic design allows the drivers to scale up with more power.
