Astell&Kern opens the SP3000 Series to Android Apps

Google Play Store and Full App Freedom Arrive on the High-End DAP Line

With a new firmware update, Astell&Kern is fundamentally changing the SP3000 series. The company’s previously restricted Android platform is becoming significantly more open, giving users access to the Google Play Store and the freedom to install apps directly.

The update applies to the A&ultima SP3000, SP3000M, and SP3000T models. It marks an important shift for the brand and reflects how dramatically portable audio habits have changed in recent years. Even in the ultra high-end segment, streaming has become just as important as local music libraries.

A More Controlled System — With Clear Limitations

For years, Astell&Kern intentionally relied on a heavily customized Android operating system. There were good reasons for that approach. The interface remained focused on music playback, the system felt stable, and the devices delivered a clean, distraction-free user experience.

At the same time, the concept also came with compromises. Installing additional apps required manual APK sideloading, and compatibility was often inconsistent. Some streaming applications worked only partially, while others struggled because of missing Google services.

Users of TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple Music, and Roon ARC in particular have been asking for a more open ecosystem for quite some time.

Native Google Play Store Support

This is exactly where the new update comes in. For the first time, the SP3000 series gains direct access to the Google Play Store. Apps can now be installed and updated just like on a standard Android device.

That dramatically improves day-to-day usability. Services such as Spotify, TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Plexamp can now run without complicated workarounds.

For streaming-focused listeners, this is likely one of the most important upgrades Astell&Kern has introduced in years. While the company’s players have long been praised for their sound quality and luxurious construction, many users considered them less flexible than competing Android-based DAPs from brands like FiiO, HiBy, or iBasso.

Greater Freedom for Users

The increased openness goes far beyond streaming apps alone. Users can now install a much wider range of Android applications, including:

• audiobook services
• alternative music players
• DLNA and network-audio tools
• DSP and equalizer software
• specialized audio applications

As a result, the SP3000 lineup moves closer to becoming a fully featured Android DAP while still maintaining Astell&Kern’s audiophile philosophy.

A Refreshed User Interface

Alongside the Android upgrade, Astell&Kern is also introducing an updated user interface. The new “Generation 4.5 UI” is designed to feel smoother and more modern while improving the integration of streaming services.

Navigation and library management have also been refined, creating a cleaner and more intuitive experience overall.

Rollout Begins in Stages

According to current information, the update is already available for the SP3000M and SP3000T. The standard SP3000 is expected to follow shortly afterward.

The firmware is distributed via OTA updates directly on the devices.

An Important Step for Astell&Kern

The update highlights how much the portable high-end audio market has evolved. In the past, local Hi-Res libraries were the primary focus. Today, many users expect a seamless streaming experience without restrictions.

With this update, Astell&Kern is finally combining its premium hardware and high-end DAC architecture with the flexibility of a more open Android platform. For many listeners, that could make the SP3000 series significantly more appealing.

Of course, questions remain regarding battery life, background processes, and long-term Android support. Still, for many existing owners, this is likely the exact feature upgrade they have been waiting for.
